Wilmington Branch Suzuki Academy* *Wilmington Branch | * About Wilmington Branch Suzuki Academy | The WMS/DMS Suzuki Academy is based on the
educational philosophy of Shinichi Suzuki, applying
the mother tongue approach to music study. Students
learn to play violin, viola, cello or flute as they would
learn to speak language—by listening and imitating—
with the support of parents and teacher. Parents are
expected to attend lessons with children and assist with
home study. In addition to the weekly private lesson,
mandatory group/theory classes meet weekly, providing
further reinforcement of techniques studied during the
private lessons and increasing students’ motivation
and enjoyment.
Specific group assignments are determined by each
student’s individual skills and advancement through
the Suzuki literature. Recitals are scheduled throughout
the year. All WMS/DMS Suzuki faculty have received Suzuki teacher training and are registered through the Suzuki
Association of the Americas. Suzuki instruction is appropriate for children as young as age 2, depending on the child’s
development and the instrument. Very young children and their parent/caregiver are interviewed prior to receiving an
approval to begin formal Suzuki studies. WMS/DMS Suzuki Academy instruction is available at the Wilmington Branch
and also on a limited basis at the school’s Pike Creek location.
Tuition for the WMS/DMS Suzuki Academy includes: private
study; mandatory weekly Suzuki group/theory class; student
recital participation (including piano accompaniment
fees); WMS/DMS Suzuki workshops and events; and Suzuki
Class for New Parents. Advanced Suzuki Academy students
who qualify by audition may participate in Orchestral Prep
for Suzuki Strings (Saturday) or Orchestral Prep for Strings
(Monday), the Delaware Youth Orchestra or the Delaware
Youth Symphony in addition to traditional Suzuki group
classes at no additional cost. | | Fee: | Private Study + Suzuki Group Class Tuition (per semester):

| 6Kindermusik for the Young Child® (Years I & II) | For your budding musician, Young Child provides a pressurefree,
developmentally appropriate transition where children
can musically succeed before taking on more formal
instruction. In small, movement-oriented classes, children
develop their greatest instruments—their voices—while
learning the symbols and vocabulary of music-making.
Your child develops instrument-playing skills with the
introduction of the glockenspiel, recorder and dulcimer, as
listening activities strengthen the child’s ability to discern a
variety of instruments and musical concepts. Through creative
learning activities, children begin to read music and to
create musical compositions—tangible accomplishments
that instill positive emotions about their musicality. Soon a
request of “Mom, when can I take piano lessons?” may
surprise you. Our Kindermusik graduates are ready for
formal music instruction for many reasons. They simply
LOVE music-making! They develop vocal and rhythm skills
which they can bring to the instruments. They are so excited
about making music that they love to practice!
These courses provide four semesters of activities for children
ages 5 to 7 years. They are also introduced to famous
composers and instruments of the orchestra. Parent/
caregiver participates in the last 10 minutes of class. Materials
include home activities to reinforce each lesson. | | Age: | Year I: 5 - 6 years. A child joining for the second semester without attending the first semester must be in kindergarten.
