WMS CALENDAR OF EVENTS

The Wilmington Music School presents a variety of professional programs throughout the year in our 300-seat concert hall, which offers one of the best acoustical venues in this area. Our concert season showcases noted area artists and WMS faculty members, as well as special groups and guests. All tickets are $10 ($5 students/age 60+) unless otherwise noted and can be purchased in advance by calling 302-762-1132.

“Good Vibrations” String Department Day #1
A year-long series of engaging and fun events for ALL string players! Activities will include a trip to hear the Delaware Symphony perform with the L.A. Guitar Quartet as well as a fiddling/bluegrass workshop and a master class directed by our three new violin teachers. The series will also feature a recital and Q&A session by Wilmington resident and Juilliard senior, violinist Genia Maslov, and an opportunity for students to take a lesson on a different instrument. Free!

Brandywine Harp Orchestra, Celtic Journeys
The Brandywine Harp Orchestra will perform music from their new CD “Celtic Journeys,” which features the 16-piece Celtic harp orchestra in traditional and new music from Scotland and Ireland. Proceeds from CD sales will go toward the orchestra’s upcoming trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, where they have been invited to perform at the International Harp Festival in April 2009. Directed by WMS/DMS harp faculty Janet Witman. A WMS/DMS performing arts partner.

Cultural Crossroads Program, Latin American Heritage Concert
The first of four Cultural Crossroads programs that integrate music, dance and visual arts to celebrate the rich musical diversity of our world and our own community, coordinated by WMS/DMS faculty Christopher Braddock. Join Philadelphia’s Tambonito for a concert and demonstration focusing on the songs, dances and musical instruments of Cuba and Brazil. In addition, WMS/DMS guitar faculty Matthew Lavanish will perform works by the great Paraguayan guitarist and composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré. After the show, members of Tambonito will present a workshop on Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian drumming and dancing. An art exhibit will feature the works of emerging Latino visual artists Esteban Pilonieta, José Ruiz and Ruben Sanchez, on display at the Wilmington Branch from September 1 to November 1.

Music Masters Concert Series, Piano Duo & Four-Hands Extravaganza
Music Masters concerts showcase the talented WMS/DMS faculty and renowned special guests in a series of themed performances. This exciting evening of music for two pianos and piano four-hands features works by Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Mozart, Barber and Holdemann. Featuring WMS/DMS piano faculty Donna Beech, David Brown, Jennifer Chen, Richard Gangwisch, Liliya Maslov, Oleg Maslov, Ethel Olsen, Tracy Richardson, Benjamin Whitten and Hiroko Yamazaki.

Chesapeake Silver Cornet Brass Band, British-Style Brass
Enjoy the unique sound of a 35-piece, British-style brass concert band. Well-known throughout Great Britain, Europe and Australia, this distinct musical genre is growing in popularity in the United States. From classics to swing, this concert by the Chesapeake Brass Band will suit all musical tastes. Conducted by Ed Hockersmith. A WMS/DMS performing arts partner.
