The Music School of Delaware Announces 2010-2011 Concerts

(WILMINGTON, DEL.) September 2, 2010– The Music School of Delaware, one of the state's largest arts presenters, releases dates for its 2010-2011 concert season. The Music School will open the season with a Cultural Crossroads Concert: Folk Traditions of the U.S. featuring music and discussion by Wilmington favorite David Bromberg on October 21st.

Cultural Crossroads Concert Series: Concerts and workshops integrate music, dance and visual arts to celebrate the rich musical diversity of our world and our own community. Events are held at the Wilmington Branch.

Folk Traditions of the U.S., featuring music & discussion by David Bromberg October 21, 2010—6:45 p.m. workshops, 8:00 p.m. concert In interactive workshops, learn how to prepare culinary classics such as spoon bread, Hoppin’ John and okra; try out a variety of American dance steps; and explore the art of quilting. Enter a raffle for a dreadnought-style guitar. The evening will culminate in a performance by the Music School’s Brandywine Fiddlers, followed by Grammy nominee David Bromberg’s special presentation, “I Never Heard a Horse Sing It,” in which he will demonstrate how song lyrics and plots migrate into other songs. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students Ages 11 and up

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., & Black History Tribute Proceeds benefit the Jacqueline Beach Faulcon Scholarship Fund  January 14, 2011—7:00 p.m. This popular annual concert pays tribute to Dr. King through works by African-American composers and musicians — including pieces by Delaware blues guitarist Frank Hovington, classical guitarist Justin Holland, the Nat King Cole Trio and Michael Jackson — as well as a recitation of Robert Kennedy’s famous speech regarding Dr. King’s assassination. Featuring soprano Jacqueline Beach Faulcon and pianist Clarence Faulcon, the Music School’s Cello Choir, collaborations between the faculties of the Music School and the Christina Cultural Arts Center, and more! Tickets: $5 each

Music, Ritual & Healing April 3, 2011—3:00 p.m. A short concert will feature choral selections from famous Classical requiems, followed by a presentation of Native American ceremonial music and dance. Featuring Select Choral Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Michael Larkin, and the Owltalker Trio. Concertgoers will then explore additional aspects of therapeutic arts through several workshops, including one on gong meditation with Eric Webb and one on Nia — healing movement through expressive dance and martial arts — with Erin Bobo. A visual art exhibit will showcase works by Betsy Molina Mortenson and Jennifer Davies-Reazor, with pieces from their show “Imagodae — Envisioning the Feminine Divine.” Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students


Music Masters Concert SeriesConcerts at both branches showcase Music School faculty artists and special guests in themed performances.

Czech It Out! November 3, 2010—7:00 p.m. Works by Czech composers Dvořák, Reicha, Suk and Janacek. Featuring Luigi Mazzocchi, violin; Jennifer Crowell Stomberg, cello; and Lotus Cheng, piano. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students

Beethoven Birthday Bash December 15, 2010—7:00 p.m. In honor of Beethoven’s 240th birthday on December 16, works include his “Archduke” Trio; Sonata for Piano & Violin, Op. 12, No. 2; and Sonata for Piano & Cello, Op. 102, No. 4. Featuring Kate Ransom, violin; Lawrence Stomberg, guest cello; and Holly Roadfeldt-O’Riordan, piano. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students

The Magic of Mendelssohn Proceeds benefit the Anthony G. Simmons Scholarship Fund January 19, 2011—7:00 p.m. Three eras of composers: Bach Violin Sonata No. 5; Haydn String Quartet, Op. 76, No. 1; and Mendelssohn String Quartet, Op. 13. Featuring the Serafin String Quartet; Luigi Mazzocchi, violin; and Tracy Richardson, harpsichord. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students

A Tribute to the Piano February 16, 2011—7:00 p.m. Piano duo, four-hands and solo works by Schubert, Dvořák, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Brahms and faculty David Brown. Featuring pianists David Brown, Jennifer Chen, Richard Gangwisch, Liliya Maslov, Oleg Maslov and Holly Roadfeldt-O’Riordan. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students

Milford Branch

Musical Mélange October 24, 2010—3:00 p.m. Works for violin and piano, solo piano and piano four-hands. Featuring Martin Beech, guest violin, and faculty Donna Beech, piano; Donna DeLaurentis, piano; Eliezer Gutman, violin; and Liliya Maslov, piano. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students

Milford Branch Faculty & Friends February 27, 2011—3:00 p.m. Featuring the Copeland String Quartet – with faculty Eliezer Gutman, violin, and Mark Ward, cello – as well as other Milford faculty and special guests. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students


Wilmington Community Orchestra Concert Series: This accomplished amateur ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Timothy Schwarz, presents a series of concerts at the Wilmington Branch in collaboration with faculty and guest soloists.

The Titan Comes to Wilmington November 7, 2010—3:00 p.m. Mahler Symphony No. 1, “Titan;” Mozart Piano Concerto, K. 488. Featuring piano soloist Hiroko Yamazaki. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students

Inside a Musical Cave May 13, 2011—7:00 p.m. Mendelssohn “Hebrides” Overture; Beethoven “Egmont” Overture. Featuring winners of the Concerto Competition for Young Musicians. Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors & students


Family Concerts: These fun and unique family-focused concerts are designed to engage even the youngest children in musical adventures that will entertain the entire family.

Webster the Musical Spider November 6, 2010—3:00 p.m., Wilmington Branch and November 7, 2010—3:00 p.m., Milford Branch Your favorite musical spider returns! In this original composition by guest harpist Valerie Von Pechy Whitcup, Webster, a spider, is ridiculed because he prefers to spend his time playing music on his web rather than hunting for bugs to eat. In a surprising turn of events, Webster becomes a hero, and everyone learns the power of music and the lesson of acceptance. Featuring Serafin String Quartet; Valerie Von Pechy Whitcup, guest harp; Paula Nelson, flute; and Michael Larkin, narrator. Tickets: $5 each Ages 4 to 11 and adults

Holiday Sing December 5, 2010—3:00 p.m., Wilmington Branch Join in a fun-filled, sing-along concert with Early Childhood faculty and the Wilmington Youth Chorale, conducted by Marybeth Miller. Tickets: Free! All ages welcome!

Family Music Celebration January 22, 2011—10:00 a.m., Wilmington Branch Bring your whole family and enjoy free Early Childhood music and movement classes. Tickets: Free! Ages 1½ to 7, with adult

A Musical Storybook February 5, 2011—3:00 p.m., Wilmington Branch and February 6, 2011—3:00 p.m., Milford Branch Did you know music can tell a story? Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” for piano four-hands and Ridout’s “Ferdinand the Bull” blend instruments with narration to create lively characters and capture the imagination. Tickets: $5 each Ages 4 and up

Astral Harp Experience February 23, 2011—7:00 p.m., Wilmington Branch Explore the wonders of the universe while enjoying wonderful music! This multimedia event combines an astrophotography presentation with original harp compositions and arrangements. Written and presented by harp faculty Janet Witman and planetarium operator Kevin Witman. Tickets: $5 each Ages 12 and up

Carnival of the Animals & Instrument Petting Zoo March 6, 2011—3:00 p.m., Wilmington Branch Here come the animals! From chickens to kangaroos, elephants to lions (and even fossils!), this favorite suite for piano duo by Saint-Saëns is sure to delight children and adults alike. Following the performance, children can meet their favorite instruments in an Instrument Petting Zoo. Tickets: $5 each Ages 4 and up

Founded in 1924, The Music School of Delaware reaches thousands of people from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland through its instructional programs and 75 public performances each year. The Music School is the only nationally accredited program of its kind in Delaware and is the only statewide accredited community music school in the nation.
