The Music School of Delaware Receives First City of Wilmington ACCESS Award

Wilmington, Del. – The Music School of Delaware was awarded the inaugural City of Wilmington ACCESS Award. Mayor James M. Baker presented the award in recognition of the Music School’s long-standing tradition of serving people of all ages with special needs. The City of Wilmington created the ACCESS Award to acknowledge the individuals or organizations whose efforts increase ACCESS to people living with disabilities, thus enabling them to live rich and rewarding lives.


“Music has the power to transcend challenges and provide an enhanced quality of life,” says President & CEO Kate M. Ransom. “Serving those members of our community with special needs has been and will continue to be an important part of our mission.”


The Music School of Delaware offers individual and group programs designed for children and adults with special needs. The registrar works closely with students and caregivers to identify the students’ needs and make the best possible placement. The Music School employs music therapists and instructors with experience to work with a wide range of special needs. Group programs include Music for Children on the Autism Spectrum and Musical Memory Lane for adults with Alzheimer’s dementia. Founded in 1924, The Music School of Delaware reaches thousands of people from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland through its instructional programs and 75 public performances each year. The Music School is the only nationally accredited program of its kind in Delaware and is the only statewide accredited community music school in the nation.
